New Radar and Software Installation to Keep 13 Million People Safe

In a move to bolster Indonesia’s Early Warning System, the country’s Agency for Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysics (BMKG), has chosen Baron Weather, a worldwide leader in superior weather intelligence and technology, to replace an older weather radar in Surabaya, the capital city of East Java. Installation will begin this fall and be completed by the end of 2024.

The strategic upgrade will involve installing a state-of-the-art C-band radar manufactured by Baron to provide superior weather data quality and cutting-edge dissemination. Baron will also install Lynx, a robust workstation-based platform that doubles as an analytical and communication tool designed to convey critical weather information to the public.

Surabaya, a historic port city on the northeastern edge of Java Island, is Indonesia's second-largest city. With more than 3 million residents living within the city limits and more than 10 million in the broader metropolitan area, the city's strategic location and dense population make having an advanced weather monitoring system essential.

The initiative is expected to significantly improve the Early Warning System for one of Southeast Asia’s most vital regions.

“BMKG's ongoing efforts to advance Indonesia's weather forecasting infrastructure is crucial due to the various types of meteorological challenges the country and its population face,” said

Baron Vice President of Integrated Weather Solutions Jon Tarleton. “Our mission is to ensure the public and decision-makers have access to the most accurate weather information possible when managing and mitigating the risks of severe weather events.”

Sibakom, an Indonesian systems integration company, is the appointed prime contractor for the project and has been Baron’s representative in Indonesia since 2011.

“Together, we have delivered three weather radars and a complex, high-resolution weather prediction modeling system to work with Indonesia’s Marine Meteorology System (MMS),” said Sibakom Managing Director Patrice Tobing. “Baron is one of the top choices for weather radar systems in Indonesia. We have always worked toward a long-term strategic partnership, prioritizing project sustainability.”

Extreme maritime weather events – those which are dangerous to any vessel at sea – threaten life, property and the marine environment and can adversely affect the global blue economy. Despite decades of investments in weather forecasting that have substantially improved predictability of such events, ships still transit into hazardous conditions, resulting in damage and, often, loss of cargo, personnel injuries or deaths, and environmental damage. Incidents of ships encountering extreme weather in recent years underscore the urgent need for action by the shipping and metocean communities.
