The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) is an intergovernmental organization with a membership of 193 Member States and Territories.  Established by the ratification of the WMO Convention on 23 March 1950, WMO became the specialized agency of the United Nations for meteorology (weather and climate), operational hydrology and related geophysical sciences a year later.

HMEI is one of only eight international non-governmental organizations with a formal working arrangement with the United Nations WMO. The Association is fully accredited to the WMO and other UN organizations and actively facilitates interaction and communication between its members and a broad range of international and national organizations, both governmental and private, for the mutual benefit of all parties.
